What is a Simple Moving Average?

A Simple Moving Average (SMA) represents the average closing price of a stock over a selected number of trading periods. For example, an SMA 50 is calculated using the closing prices of the previous 50 trading periods, while an SMA 200 represents a much longer price history.

Shorter moving averages generally respond more quickly to recent price changes, while longer moving averages move more gradually. Traders commonly compare multiple moving averages to understand how short-term price behaviour relates to the broader trend.

How to Use the SMA Screeners

The scanners on this page are designed primarily as filtering tools. A stock appearing in a crossover or Near SMA scanner does not automatically mean that the stock should be bought or sold.

For example, after identifying a stock using one of the SMA scanners, you can study its individual stock page, price chart, broader trend, RSI, 52-week position or other technical information before forming your own view.

Moving averages are only one way of analyzing market behaviour. You can combine SMA analysis with other Trend Screener tools for additional market context.
